An internship at Grant Thornton Advisory – the experience of Marijn Nijssen

This summer I have been working with the Advisory team of Grant Thornton in the Dutch Caribbean as a consulting intern, an experience I would like to tell you more about!

The Advisory team helps diverse clients in a wide range of industries with their unique challenges. These clients are not only located in Curaçao, but also on other islands in the Caribbean and beyond. I got the chance to work for multiple clients, both in the public and private sector. For instance, I helped on a proposal for the government, on a risk management project in healthcare and on a process analysis project in the retail sector. Also, I joined the Client Appreciation Event, an event organized by Grant Thornton to appreciate the relationships with all clients. Therefore, I got a good impression of the Advisory team’s clients and their challenges.

Moreover, I truly enjoyed the dynamics of working as a consulting intern within the Advisory team. During my internship, I contributed to activities within the entire project cycle: from acquisition to the successful delivery of the end products. For example, I helped with writing proposals, preparing and conducting workshops and presentations at clients and working on final reports. During these activities, I always worked in teams and was guided well. The Advisory team is very close and through events and informal activities, I quickly felt part of the team!

In addition to further developing my consulting skills, I also learned a lot from the international experience. During my internship I met many new people and discovered the culture of Curaçao. At the office we usually greet each other in Papiamento and on a typical workday you hear multiple languages, including Dutch, English, Spanish and Papiamento. Outside working hours there is plenty of time to discover the island, visit the beach or join a happy hour. What I especially like about doing an internship rather than visiting as a tourist, is that you get to experience more that just the typical tourist hotspots. Highlights were certainly local holidays, such as Dia di Bandera and the Harvest Festival Parade Seú.

In short, I have had a great experience in the Advisory team, in which I got to know Grant Thornton in the Dutch Caribbean, Curaçao and its people better!

Saludos, Marijn Nijssen
